“There doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done!”  This is a common theme that I hear from many of my clients, friends and family members. Stress, though necessary at times, affects the body in many different ways. One of those is the suppression of our immune response.

To simplify, when we are running from the Saber-toothed tiger, for instance, our bodies are not thinking about fighting that cold virus that just entered our nasal passage because, quite frankly, that little virus really won’t matter if we’re eaten by the threat that has launched us into our Fight or Flight response.

Once that threat is removed, our body naturally returns to its homeostatic state, and it can address the viral intruder that snuck in while we were running for our lives. When we are chronically stressed, we can set ourselves up for a situation where we become more susceptible to illness due to the long-term suppression of our immune function.

So, without adding more tasks to my client’s daily list, you might ask, “How can I help to support them through essential oil use that is effective AND efficient?” This is where the use of respiratory supporting oils comes in.

Did you know that respiratory viruses thrive at 98 degrees? This just so happens to be the temperature found inside the nasal passages. This is one of the reasons why steams are so effective in fighting colds and the flu, as they raise the temperature within the nose and deliver essential oils that are pathogenic busters!

Traditional steaming methods take time to set up and execute. And remember, “not enough time” is the stressor I’m trying to help my clients work through. Here is where the stock bottle of respiratory oils in the shower comes in. I lovingly refer to this as the “time-saving steam.”

At the beginning of the daily shower, simply find a corner farthest from the shower head (so the oils are not washed away), and place 5-6 drops of the stock blend in that corner. The shower heat will help fill the space with the essential oil molecules so that you will be breathing in the aroma all through your shower time. Brilliant, right?

Shower Steam Blend for Cold and Flu Season*
30 drops Black Spruce Oil (Picea mariana)
30 drops Hyssop ct. 1,8-cineole Oil (Hyssopus officinalis var decumbens
30 drops Lemon Oil (Citrus limon)

Directions:
1. Add essential oils to 5 ml bottle with orifice reducer and place in shower.
2. Place 5-6 drops in a far corner of the shower when starting the water.
3. Enjoy the aroma during your shower.

*This recipe is for adult use only. If you want a child-friendly version simply omit Hyssop essential oil from this blend.

I like to incorporate this routine into daily showers as soon as cold and flu season is upon us. This helps to keep my vital energy up and helps fight any sneaky germs that try to take advantage of my overly stressed system.
