Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and Asia, specifically the area around the Mediterranean Sea. “The name Origanum is derived from two Greek words, oros (mountain) and ganos (joy), in allusion to the gay appearance this plant gives to the hillsides on which they grow.”(Grieves, M -A Modern Herbal, 1996) The plant was introduced to the United States in the 1600s by colonists who brought it over from Europe.
