Introduction
When I was new to aromatherapy, I came across a formula that called for Cistus. After some digging, I discovered Cistus, also known as Rock Rose. Scientifically, it's known as Cistus ladanifer, which explains why it is sometimes called Cistus. Rock Rose is the common name and the one I'll use throughout this article.

Rock Rose is a species of flowering plant in the Cistaceae family. Native to the western Mediterranean region, including Spain, Greece, Morocco, and Portugal, this evergreen shrub boasts beautiful white flowers with deep crimson markings. On a recent trip to Morocco, I kept my eye out for the plant, but it wasn't readily identifiable as it flowers in the spring. The plant has leathery leaves, white or pink flowers, and resin-covered twigs. You'll be learning more about this interesting plant in an upcoming Thrive article.
